OR Throughput Evaluation
QHR’s Patient Services has the resources to conduct a thorough evaluation of your surgical
throughput processes of the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Ambulatory Surgery
and Endoscopy Suites. The evaluation focuses on four operational and financial processes:
revenue enhancement, surgical throughput, resource utilization, and performance monitoring.
Approach:
■ Observe daily operations as it pertains to
efficiency of surgeon, anesthesia and staff
■ Evaluate existing anesthesia scheduling
and clinical practices
■ Perform a departmental chart review for
correct documentation, coding and charges
■ Evaluate the phases of surgical throughput
to include patient access/registration, preadmission
testing, case scheduling and room utilization
■ Examine existing case scheduling methods,
room and surgeon utilization, staffing and hours
of operation using client surgical data
| ■ Follow patients through a day of surgery
to determine on-time delivery and efficiency
■ Evaluate the materials and supplies
procurement process and perform a sterile
process review
■ Evaluate physician and staff satisfaction
as it pertains to personal interaction, department
operations, scheduling practices, anesthesia and
leadership |
Outcomes:
■ Improve surgical documentation and
charge capture to increase reimbursement
■ Improve patient access through improvements
to preadmission testing
■ Redesign the surgical scheduling process
to be suitable toward surgeon productivity
■ Implement improvements in patient throughput | ■ Revaluate anesthesia contract suited to
improvements in surgical efficiencies
■ Create a common vision statement to
establish on-time delivery of services
■ Create a decision group to manage the
operations of the department |
